Passing By is a reminder app that notifies you when you arrive at places relevant to your reminders. It is published by King Squared (“we”, “us”), the data controller for this app. This policy explains what data the app uses and why.
Location
Passing By uses precise location, including in the background (when the app is closed or not in use), to tell when you arrive at or leave a shop, your home or your workplace. This is the app’s core feature.
Your location history is not stored on our servers. Android uses your location on your device to trigger the reminders.
Outside the United Kingdom, the app sends your current coordinates to the public OpenStreetMap Overpass API to find nearby shops. That request contains no account ID and no reminder content.
Home and work locations you set are stored only on your device.
Reminder text
Your reminders are stored on your device only.
When AI understanding is switched on, the text of a new reminder is sent over HTTPS to our server (hosted on Cloudflare), which passes it to Anthropic’s Claude API to work out the task and suitable kinds of place. We do not store reminder text on our server. Anthropic processes it under its commercial terms and does not use API data to train models by default.
If our server can’t be reached, or AI understanding is off, the reminder is understood on your device instead.
Voice
Voice input uses your phone’s built-in speech recognition service (usually Google’s). Passing By only receives the resulting text.
Test versions
Test versions of the app keep a short diagnostic log (when shop lists were refreshed, when you arrived at or left a place, which reminders were shown) on your device only. It is never uploaded. You can view or clear it in Settings → Event log.
What we don’t do
No advertising, no selling or sharing of data with data brokers, no account required, no analytics or tracking SDKs.
Retention and deletion
Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored on your device. Our server keeps operational logs (request counts and errors) for up to 30 days. They contain no reminder text and no location.
